Which size curling iron should be used?

I am curling my hair for my prom and was looking for some recommendations from others. I am looking to go with an old fashioned hollywood style. I currently have a 3/4" curling iron but I am considering going for something closer to 1 1'4" or 1 1/2". Which size barrell will work best? Is there a differnce aside from the size of the curls?

The larger the barrel, the larger the curls.. if you want your hair to have more of a soft wavey look, use a large barrel.. that is what I do.. I have a 1 1/2 inch barrel and it not only leaves my hair with the soft loose curls, but it straightens out the wierd natural wave I have..

Go with a 1-1/2" and try to get a professional model. Check them out on e-bay. You can get some really good deals.

bigger irons create bigger looser curls. If you can wrap the hair on the barrel 3 times you can get one full curl. If you want the old fashioned wave from the 20s, that's actually from what is called finger waves. This is something you probably can't do on your own. Most hairdressers can't even do them! But you can give it a shot. Wet hair and mix gel with water until it is very loose and gooey. Work it into the hair a good amount. Part the hair a finger's length back and slant the part a little to one side. comb hair toward face in a C shape and hold down on the top of head then use a comb and work hair between index and middle finger. Sounds hard huh? It is!!! After you have whole head shaped you wrap a scarf around and let dry. Once its completely dry you brush out the hair and those waves fall into place. Best of luck if this is what you want to achieve.
